1.1) What are the sfskaters lists?
The sfskaters mailing list allows skaters and skating organizations in the San Francisco area to reach each other.

There are two mailing lists to choose from, but you only need to subscribe to one of them.

sfskaters
The main sfskaters mailing list. You will receive a copy of each message posted.

sfskaters-digest
The sfskaters digest list. You will receive one message each day that any messages are posted, and all the messages posted that day will be contained in it.

1.2) How do I subscribe to the lists?
To subscribe to the main list:
Send an email message to sfskaters-request@sfskaters.org and in the body of the message put the word "subscribe". The subject of the message is ignored.

To subscribe to the digest list:
Send an email message to sfskaters-digest-request@sfskaters.org and in the body of the message put the word "subscribe". The subject of the message is ignored.

1.3) How do I unsubscribe from the lists?
To unsubscribe from the main mailing list:
Send an email message to sfskaters-request@sfskaters.org and in the body of the message put the word "unsubscribe". The subject of the message is ignored.

To unsubscribe from the digest mailing list:
Send an email message to sfskaters-digest-request@sfskaters.org and in the body of the message put the word "unsubscribe". The subject of the message is ignored.

1.4) How do I post to the lists?
You can post a message to sfskaters@sfskaters.org and your message will be sent to all people subscribed to either the sfskaters or sfskaters-digest lists. You may provide any subject you want. Your subject will be prepended with "[sfskaters]" automatically.

When you post a message, everyone on the list will see your email address. Unless you post a message nobody will know you are on the list (except for the list admistrator).

1.5) Are there rules about what I can and can't post?
The main rule is: don't annoy the skaters. If you want some do's and don'ts, here is by no means a complete list:

Do
  • Post questions about skating, skates, events, etc. which are not already covered in this FAQ.
  • Post announcements about upcoming skating events, practices, organized skates (ice or land), etc.
  • Post results from races and other skating events, but not before they are locally aired -- no spoilers!
  • Post information on health and safety issues related to skating.
  • Post commercial advertisements related to skating (but too often).
  • Post offers to sell your used skates or skating equipment.
  • Post comments or observations about skating in S.F., events you have attended (e.g. races), or issues you'd like to see addressed (like no skates on the GG bridge).

Don't
  • Post questions which are already covered in the FAQ unless you intend to reopen the question for reconsideration.
  • Publicly chastise or embarrass someone (unless you *know* they will like it).
  • Post pyramid scheme announcements (if everyone sends me $5...).
  • Post warnings about computer viruses.
  • Requests for donations to your worthy cause, unless it is to fund skates or wheels for the underpriviliged (e.g. anyone without skates).
  • Post advertisements to sell non-skating things like cars, bikes, etc.
  • Post invitations to share a ski cabin or join you for skiing, river boat rafting, going to a movie, etc. An exception to this is D's annual skate-ski trip, where people skate downhill on specialized boots that work like skates on the snow.
  • Post messages designed to annoy people just to cause email wars. Don't start email wars, and definetly, don't participate in email wars. Just delete posts that annoy you, or send a message only to the author.
  • Send your unsubscribe request to the sfskaters list itself instead of sfskaters-request@lists.best.com
  • Post long, rambling messages which you weren't even interested enough in to proofread.
1.6) How can I get something added or changed in the FAQ?
The current maintainer of the sfskaters FAQ is Howard Cohen, hoco@timefold.com. Contact him if you want anything added or changed.

1.7) How can I find out who is on the list?
You can't. If someone posts a message, you can see who posted it. There is no other way to find out who is on the list. The "who" operation has been reserved only for the list administrator. Sorry. People have a right to their privacy.

1.8) Who can I contact if I have more questions, or problems with subscribing or unsubscribing?
The current sfskaters mailing list administrator is Howard Cohen, hoco@timefold.com. Contact him if you have further questions.

1.9) How do I reply to the whole list vs. the author of a posting?
If you wish to reply to a message you receive, you must decide whether the reply should go to the author of the posting, or the entire list. Use your "Reply" option, button or command to reply to the author only. Use "Reply to All" to reply to the entire list, including the author, or simply change the mail address to sfskaters@sfskates.org yourself.

If you use "Reply to All", the author will receive two copies of your reply (one from you, and one from the list). You can prevent this by deleting the author's email address from the list of addresses to which the mail will be sent.
