Skating in San Francisco Should Not Be a Crime! |

Did you know that it is still illegal to skate anywhere in
San Francisco except on a sidewalk in a residential area!
On 9/22/98 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted
9 to 1 to approve the San Francisco Skate Transit Pilot
Program and soon after Mayor Willie Brown signed it into
law! :-)
The fact that we are on the forefront of skating laws in
the U.S. is due entirely to the efforts of Paul Pillitteri
and David Miles, and the support of many of our SFSkaters.
They have been working with President of the Board of
Supervisors, Tom Ammiano and the
heads of various City Departments to move toward legalizing
skating in San Francisco. It has been a very long process, but
but it has finally come to fruition in the form of the
Nation's first Skate Advisory Committee. It is based on
the Bicycle Advisory Committee and includes members from
skating, environmental, bicycle and community groups.
Don't think we've won yet, because here is still a lot of
work to do, and then we skaters will have to live up to
our end of the new legislation. Follow traffic laws,
skate safe, be courteous to everyone on the road, and
always wear a helmet; you'll be doing your part to help
legalize skating in San Francisco.
