While cycling has made great strides in San Francisco, there is another group that have been following their lead and making some great strides of their own. For the past two years, David Miles, leader of the famed "Friday Night Skate" and President of the California Outdoor Rollerskating Association and Paul Pillitteri, fellow Midnight Rollers and C.O.R.A. member, have been working with Supervisor Tom Armiano and representatives of other city departments help reshape the laws that prohibit skaters from traveling/commuting with the flow of traffic in the street. These actions have brought about a new awareness of San Francisco's rapidly expanding skate community and have lead to the creation of the nation's first "Skating Advisory Committee" (SAC), appointed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. This committee is being formed to provide a close working relationship between the skate community and the city departments to problem solve and to have a formal forum for communication. Patterned after the Bike Advisory Committee, SAC would be made up of 11 voting members and initially have responsibilities to "develop a plan for skate related improvements, review policies and programs related to skating in the transportation element of the general plan of the city, and develop a plan for public outreach." The 11, non-paid, voting members will consist of representatives from the following categories: 1) Three individuals from skating organizations 2) One individual from the skating industry 3) Two individuals from environmental organizations 4) Four at-large skaters 5) One representative from a local organization that has expertise with pedestrian safety issues. Non-voting members shall be represented from the following City departments: - Department of Public Works (DPW) - Department of Parking and Traffic - Police department - MUNI - Department of City Planning We are now in the process of selecting those people who will make up the SAC. We intend to add skating as a part of the discussion in the alternative transportation mix. We also intend to participate in the Alternative Transportation Summit planned later this summer.
