From: Paul@mmotion.com (Media In Motion) Subject: [sfskaters] City Code Section 100 Date: Thu, 24 Jul 1997 16:55:54 -0800 Hi Skaters, I'm please to announce that we have been making great progress toward changing the law which prohibits us from skating in the street. After the last series of three meetings, all major SF departments are supportive of a one year pilot program. The purpose of a program is to allow the City to monitor and track our progress. We must demonstrate our ability to share the road with cyclists, pedestrians and motorized vehicles. We must also demonstrate our ability to skate safely and obey traffic laws. At this point, several legal issues are all that stand between us and the drafting of the language for a vote before the Board of Supervisors. I currently believe the city will be able to resolve the issues... but mixing two parts State/City law with one part liability and suddenly you have a volatile brew! Everyone wants to make sure it is handled right - which is really in our best interest. If all goes well, the pilot program will allow access to designated routes throughout the City. Right now, the draft list of the selected routes is fairly extensive. It allows access to virtually any part of the City using about 50% of the established bike routes. Upon successful completion of the program, we are asking for (but it is still up for discussion) access to all 25 MPH (or less) streets in the City. If we have a stellar year long program, it would be difficult for them to deny us the additional territory!?! We're still months away from closure, so keep your head and skate safely. Paul Pillitteri On a side note: Congratulations to D. for his diplomacy in dealing with the Critical Mass issue. Bringing about change within the City Government is like participating in a long slow dance. That issue was about to turn into a mosh pit, but hey... we all know that D. has got the moves! Give him a pat on the back the next time you see him! And I'd like to commend and thank each and every one of the FN Skate Patrol for the GREAT job they do every Friday. It is not a trivial task - so please give 'em a hand, your thanks and your support!
