From: paul@mmotion.com (Media In Motion (tm)) Subject: [sfskaters] Important public meeting: April 15th at 10:00 am Date: Wed, 19 Mar 1997 19:07:28 -0800 Hi Skaters, We now have a date for the initial hearing regarding our proposed change to SF City Code Sec. 100. The date is Tuesday, April 15th at 10:00 am. Please mark this down on your calender and attend this public hearing if at all possible. I will post the exact location at a later date. For those new to this issue, there is an outdated SF City Code that makes it illegal for anyone to skate on *any* business and in most cases, residential street. Many months ago, D. Miles, Howard Cohen and I met with Supervisor Ammiano to propose an updated version of this ordinance, which would allow skaters to share the road (with bicyclists and cars) at least during daylight and evening hours. Supervisor Ammiano agreed to sponsor the change and through fantastic support of the skaters, the Supervisors, the Police, etc., we finally have an opportunity to present our case to the Board of Supervisors; Economic, Development and Transportation subcommittee, chaired by Supervisor Yaki. It is *VERY* important for us to have as many skaters and supportive non-skaters show up for the hearing as possible! Letters of support from anyone (shop owners, skaters, general public, parents, etc.) would be helpful also. This is a public hearing... the general public and representatives of the city (Police, transportation, etc.) will be there to speak and comment on our proposed changes. Is this a Friday Night skate issue? Although this law effects the Friday Night Skate, it is larger than that. This law is outdated and desperately needs to reflect present day reality. Many of us use skates for transportation, we should have the right to share the roads and commute to and from work, play and enjoy the city... on skates! During the hearing, you will be able to stand and speak for 1-2 minutes if interested... this is not mandatory! Just showing up and demonstrating our numbers is helpful. If you wish to speak, we must impress upon them that we are responsible members of the community and we intend to skate with safety and courtesy. If this subcommittee votes to pass our proposed changes, it will then become an agenda item for the following Board of Supervisor committee hearing (probably April 21st.). The full Board will vote on the changes in a public meeting, but we will not be permitted to speak. If the full Board approves, it will go to the Mayors office. If approved by the Mayor, the updated law would take effect in 30 days. I will post soon to confirm the date and give directions. Hope to see everyone there! Paul Pillitteri
