From: cablader@ix.netcom.com (D Miles) Subject: [sfskaters] Sgt. Jim Hughes removed - Friday Night Skate rolls on !!!! Date: Thu, 31 Oct 1996 13:33:08 -0800 There has been some great news on the situation between the Police and the Midnight Rollers Friday Night Skate. Sgt. Jim Hughes of Northern Station, has been transfered out of the district where the Friday Night Skate rolls every Friday. This was the officer who instigated the assault on the Friday Night Skate. That guy is probably out writing tickets in Bendover, Alabama right now. The police has been called off. We can now resume our skate route and include Union Street as a part of the route. After doing a litle research, the police department has determined that we are a pretty good group of people. Our impact on traffic and the neighborhoods is minimal. Our self-policing of the skaters is impressive. They think the Friday Night Skate can probably continue without police intervention. That does not mean that we can get wild with it. Skaters that run red lights, skitch on cars or damage property will be ticketed. If you don't do these things, you will have nothing to worry about. I applaud the police for ticketing those skaters because they are the few that brought out troubles on to us in the first place. For the next two weeks the police will be watching the skaters very closely. We all must be on our best behavior. We have been given a grand opportunity present a positive image for night skating across the country. Other skaters in other cities will be able to use our example to get past these obstacles with their police and city governments. Skaters sent letters of support from across the nation and other parts of the world to the Mayor, the police and the Board of Supervisors. It helped us tremendously. We must now follow through for ourselves and for the skate community as a whole. Paul Pilliteri has done a fantastic job following through with the police and the Skate Patrol. As elections are coming up soon with the C.O.R.A. Board of Directors, we would do very well to get him on it. Keep Rollin, D. Miles Jr.
